Choosing Materials for Your Bathroom Renovation

Choosing materials is one of the most important decisions in a bathroom renovation — and one of the most enjoyable. But without a clear framework, it's easy to get lost in the options. Here's how to approach this step effectively.

Start with tile. The floor and shower walls are the most visible and most-used surfaces. Choose floor tiles with slip-resistance characteristics suitable for wet floors, according to the manufacturer's specifications, and formats that suit the room's proportions. Large-format tiles (60 × 60 cm and up) visually enlarge the space, but require a perfectly flat substrate.

Choose your vanity based on available space. A floating vanity frees up floor space and makes cleaning easier. For small bathrooms, an undermount or semi-recessed sink optimizes counter space. Make sure the height is comfortable for the main users.

For fixtures and accessories, consistency of finish is essential. Choose one finish — brushed chrome, satin nickel, or matte black — and stick to it for everything: faucets, handles, towel bars, and hooks. Mixed finishes create a visually cluttered result.

Think about lead times. Some specialty tiles, custom vanities, or imported fixtures can take four to eight weeks. At ImmoZen, we help you finalize your selections before work begins to avoid any work stoppages.

Finally, order extra tile — typically 10% more than the calculated surface area — for cuts, waste, and future repairs. Finding the same batch in a few years will be difficult.
